Interested in Becoming a Dog Trainer?
Lightpaws Dog Training is looking to add a new dog trainer to their team. They will conduct an interview, seeing what knowledge and experience you have to bring in and then do two weeks of shadowing to see if you are a good fit for the Lightpaws family.
If you are interested in learning more about becoming a dog trainer and what you might need to know to train dogs effectively, reach out and begin your own training.
Dog Training requires extensive knowledge about behavioral psychology and staying up to date on the latest information. You should have a background knowledge about breeds and what their original tasks were before most people moved away from using dogs for those jobs. For example, what dogs used to be used for drafting, or pulling cargo and people and how that could affect the dog that a family is looking to adopt and what behaviors to look out for. A trainer should also know the difference between positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment, as well as when to use one of those options. Lightpaws Dog Training primarily uses positive reinforcement, and a trainer should be able to explain to a client with very little knowledge of psychology what that means in a way for them to understand.
Lightpaws Dog Training is preferably looking for a bachelor’s degree in psychology or animal behavioral sciences. AKC certified handlers and evaluators are also preferred but not required.
Lightpaws Dog Training is currently looking to hire dog trainers as contractors, but will aim to hire full time employees in the future. As a contractor, you will create your own hours of availability, have a profile made for you, and a calendar made for you.
